AN ARAKWAL DREAM TIME STORY retold by Jordan

One day three sisters decided to go swimming at Broken Head (south of Byron Bay).
The youngest sister swam out into the ocean and got caught in a treacherous current flowing between the rocks. Her two older sisters swam to save her but they were also caught in the same treacherous current. No matter how hard they tried to swim out of the current, they could not get out of it. They screamed and cried out loud for help, but to their dismay no one was around.Slowly the three of them became exhausted fighting against the current and drowned after a despairing fight. Many years later they turned into stones that carry their names.
Bundjalung people tell this story to their children as a warning that if they swam at Broken Head,
they, too might drown and transform into stone.
